Create backgrounds using masks and stencils and ink for all your projects using a variety of different techniques. Creating backgrounds using Masks and Stencils are an easy way to blend colours in your cards and other papercrafting projects
Stampin’ Up! have been offering masks and stencils for a number of years, however, they are a product which seem to get overlooked in the catalogue. They are fabulous for creating backgrounds with colour and texture.
The butterflies and flowers layering decorative masks in the January-June mini catalogue (P65) are brilliant and very affordable, and you can do way more than just backgrounds. The background masks can be used on their own, furthermore, you can see your images really pop when you layer the detailed masks/stencils over your projects to get even more depth and dimension.
Several Ideas for using masks and stencils
- Add ink to the masks with blending brushes or sponge daubers
- Use ink refills to spritz or watercolour through the masks
- Embossing pastes for textured designs. You can add also drops of ink to the paste to colour it
- Create Zentangle style patterns in the images with a Black Stampin’ Write marker or watercolour pencil.
- Emboss the pattern on the masks/stencils onto card in a die cutting machine with a rubber mat

The butterfly was fussy cut out and attached to another piece of white card decorated using the background mask in Coatal Cabana and Daffodil Delight ink with an ombre effect
